Although far from my primary area of expertise, as the results will demonstrate, I release music under the name Capgras on occasion.
Capgras is designed as an art-pop/art-rock/electronic music project with a satirical edge and bedroom/DIY sensibility. Taking its name from a psychological condition where sufferers believe that their close friends and family have been replaced by imposters, opposed to the state of current mainstream pop, slightly snobby, overrated no matter how successful, and admittedly channelling a bit of doomer energy, this music project seeks to offer sketches of personal emotions and refractions of 21st-Century, terminally online concerns. Disclaimer: I am not a trained singer, and it shows, but the project’s main focus is on the music and lyrics.
Like with my writing and filmmaking, I have a wide range of influences in the musical form. Some of my favourite artists/most significant muses are (in no particular order):
Scott Walker, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Talking Heads, Stereolab, Jackie McClean, David Sylvian, Maurice Ravel, Akira Yamaoka, The Dismemberment Plan (pre-reunion), Joni Mitchell, Everything Everything, Unwound, William Basinski, Kate Bush, The G0-Betweens, Prefab Sprout, The Beach Boys, Talk Talk, Radiohead, XTC, Herbie Hancock, Steve Reich, Death Grips, Róisín Murphy, The Residents, Porcupine Tree, John Coltrane, Björk, King Crimson, This Heat, Maudlin of the Well, The The, Bark Psychosis, Gas, Gary Wilson, Marvin Gaye, Peshay, Steely Dan, Todd Rundgren, Burt Bacharach, Swans, Harold Budd, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Danny Brown, 12 Rods, Laura Nyro, Jessica Pratt, Tindersticks, Tonetta, Godspeed You!
